Smart Technologies for Traffic

As congestion in urban areas becomes a major issue, cities are turning to smart technology for traffic to improve the safety of drivers and reduce wasted energy. This helps passengers and drivers save time, reduces carbon emissions, and reduces traffic jams.

The technology behind it is based on software and hardware. The first is the subcomponent which executes, while the second is the command and control center. Both are enhanced by processing and sensing technologies, including ANPR (automotive license plate recognition) that captures data on vehicles’ movements and is able to detect traffic signals.

Based on the type of solution, smart traffic lights can either process data on-devices or send the data to a cloud storage. This is a way to perform more sophisticated modeling and analysis to reduce traffic congestion and align the schedules of public transportation. According to Carnegie Mellon University, this can reduce average travel time by 25 percent, wait times for signal signals are reduced by 40% and emissions are reduced by 20%.

A well-designed traffic light system in addition to reducing the time it takes to get traffic signals, can also improve the flow of pedestrians and of micromobility vehicles such as e-bikes or e-scooters. This is because they are often unable to follow the traditional preemption rules. In London the number of accidents involving e-scooters increased by 2,800% during the first half of 2021. Therefore, it is important to include them in traffic light control.
